Twenty-one years after the creation of Anambra state, the state is far from where it should be. Often times when Anambra state is mentioned in the national and international news, it is usually in the negative.
In the past, we produced Nigerian leaders in all spheres of national life from the legendry Zik of Africa, Prof. Kenneth Dike, Nwafor Orizu, Laz Ekwueme and a host of others. We offered the largest indoor market; we offered palm oil and abundant foodstuffs.
Today, our state is more renowned for “Bakassi”, violent crime, kidnapping, arson and political infidelity. Crime has been on the increase, illegal and multiple taxes and levies continue to plague our people which if unchecked could sound a death knell for our otherwise vibrant industries coupled with the epileptic power supply and lack of government support.
Some of those who wondered aloud if we are cursed are today seen as the cause, yet the debate has assumed louder proportions as to whether Anambra State is cursed or are we the cause of our problems?
Oganiru Anambra maintains that; “Anambra is not CURSED, rather she is too BLESSED to be cursed.”
Today, we are confronted with economic afflictions of great proportions where all suffer one form of economic deprivation or the other. With all the challenges confronting the country, one would readily admit that our people now sound cynical about government. They sound discouraged, because they trusted and are still trusting the government while they have been paid back with disappointments.
Corruption which has assumed the position of a national endemic cancer has not spared our state. In private business, trust has taken flight amongst us as cheating and deceit move to the front burner. This has even crept into education which involves our children - the leaders of tomorrow. They don’t like to buy books, they shun textbooks relying on miracle centers where acts of malpractice are committed aided by school proprietors and invigilators who are always induced to look the other way.
Where then is the educated class that is “A MUST” for the transformation of any society?
The result of all that fraud which did not start today, is catching up with us now, as the quality of political leadership and those elected to govern us is increasingly becoming questionable, and unemployment in Anambra state has risen from 9.8% in 2005 to 16.8% in 2008 (National office of Statistics). From 11.9% of those who sat for JAMB in Anambra state in 2005 being admitted, it plunged to 4.8% in 2008
However, reports like these should rather than depress us, spur us to action. That, in the midst of all the cynicism and skepticism, lies the courage in Ndi Anambra to continue to hope and seek those leaders that can take them to their place of rest and abundance, and derive the strength to do what is expected of them to fulfill their destinies.
Oganiru Anambra requires You and I
